Ways to Save Money on an Electric Bill
By Megan Curley
Overview
People everywhere are looking for ways to lower their monthly bills. Electric bills can soar throughout the year, costing you more than you might expect. Whether you are looking for ways to cut down on your cost of living or trying to spend more efficiently, saving money on your electric bill is a good place to start.
Step 1
Plug your electronics into a power strip. A power strip is a surge-protected circuit that has multiple outlets. The benefit of using a power strip is that it has an on/off switch that lets you turn electricity off to multiple electronics. Since plugged-in electronics draw electricity even when turned off, using a power strip lets you stop the flow of electricity without needing to unplug individual devices.
Step 2
Replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs use significantly less energy and last much longer than regular light bulbs. Even though they may be more expensive upfront, using these bulbs will save you money on your monthly electric bill.
Step 3
Set timers on your lights or set your programmable thermostat on your electric heat. Instead of leaving lights on or the heat on all day while you are gone, set the timer to turn these appliances on just before you arrive. Set the timer on air conditioner units to turn off when the desired temperature is reached. Setting timers or programming your thermostat will keep these appliances from consuming excess electricity.
Step 4
Upgrade large appliances like refrigerators or dishwashers. Newer appliances are built to be much more efficient and use less electricity and energy. While these new appliances can be expensive, the savings will reflect throughout the year on your electric bill. You can donate old appliances to those in need and many states may provide a tax credit for donating used appliances.
Step 5
Turn lights and other electronics off when you're not using them. Leaving lights, televisions or computers on while not in use is a waste of energy. You can reduce your energy bill cost just by turning off those electronics not in use throughout your day.
